Mysterious structure: Cuban Underwater City

There is a sunken city located off the coast of Cuba that was first discovered by scientists in 2001 and allegedly contains structures, statues, pyramids, other constructions that have been covered and eroded by the ocean for millennia. The discovery was made by the marine engineer Pauline Zalitzki and the husband Paul Weinzwieg, owners of an company working on an exploratory and survey missions in conjunction with the Cuban government.

Where is the sunken city located?
The sunken city of Cuban, also referred to as the Cuban underwater formation is a site believed to be a submerged granite structural complex off the coast of the Guanahacabibes, the westernmost point on the island of Cuba. It is located in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, an area subject and vulnerable to hurricanes. The Guanahacabibes National Park is one of the country’s largest natural reserves and is separated from the rest of the island by white-sand plains.

The Cuban city is submerged over 700 meters (2300 feet) underwater. The perimeter of the city covers an area of 2 square kilometers. Zalitzki and Weinzwieg’s teams filmed sonar images of the site, capturing large circles, pyramids, smooth blocks of stone, structures symmetrically organized as in an urban development. Further examinations and studies have been launched with the use of underwater visual robot that re-recorded images of the structures in better resolution and clarity. The new pictures determined formations that were slightly pyramidal, while others were circular, made of massive smooth stones which resembled granite. The size of the pyramids reportedly measured approximately 8 feet by 10 feet in height and width. Some rocks were stacked upon each other while others were not and at much further distance.

With over 70 percent of the planet being covered by water, across the millennia some man-made structures have been have been claimed by nature. The submerged Cuban city structure is thought to have been built at a higher altitude and subsequently sunk to its present depth through tectonic activity. Another theory proposes the possibility that the city was built at present altitude but might have covered by the ocean as a consequence of sea-level-rise. Both theories are challenged by the mainstream academia and experts. Many questions arise. For instance, how could the existence of the submerged city at this great depth reconcile with the well-established consensus that the sea level never dropped so low?
